Obituary for Douglas Thomas Worsham, Jr.

Douglas “Thomas” Worsham, Jr., age 73, passed away on Thursday, October 18, 2018 at his residence in Waynesville.

He was born April 1, 1945, in Waynesville. Tommy was the son of Ruth Burgin Worsham of Waynesville (Haywood Lodge) and was preceded in death by his beloved father, Douglas Thomas Worsham (“Doug”), a long-time Waynesville alderman and civic leader; a brother-in-law, Johnny Howell and his friend and soulmate, Sharon Sullivan. He is survived by his younger siblings: Ron Worsham(Sheryl) from Greensboro, NC, Trisha Alt (Dan) from Richburg, S.C. and Jean Howell of Waynesville. Tommy was raised in Haywood County where he played trumpet in the band and ran sprints for the track team at Waynesville Township High School, graduating in 1963. He attended Mars Hill College for two years and then attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. After serving as a radio specialist in the Signal Corps of the army in Vietnam, he returned to Western Carolina University on the G.I. Bill and graduated with honors with a degree in Business Administration. Tommy worked after college for the state of NC and in Human Resources at East Tennessee State University. Tommy then worked for over 25 years as a professional horse groomer and trainer and was privileged to be involved with many former racing champions, but he was most proud of his winner “Holy Bull”. In addition to horsemanship, Tommy’s eclectic interests included playing a mean game of tennis and family pool shark, the culinary arts, raising Corgi dogs, fanatically following UNC sports campaigns, vast trivia knowledge, and keeping up with a large extended family of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Tom was a member of First Baptist Church of Waynesville

A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at The Chapel of First Baptist Church of Waynesville with Reverend Dr. Robert Prince officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:30 until 3:00 p.m. prior to services at the church.

The family would like to thank the many neighbors and friends who showed support and care to Tom during the past few years, especially his first cousin Scott Burgin, who gave much time, love, support and unselfish attention in caring for Tom.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Waynesville, P.O. Box 690, Waynesville, NC 28786 or the Wounded Warriors Project, P.O. Box 758517, Topeka, KS 66675
